Comment vous êtes-vous rencontrés ? Comment le duo s’est-il formé ?

C’est un ami commun qui nous a présenté. Lennon cherchait un chanteur pour son projet avec un autre groupe appelé Swimgood, mais il a fini par créer Placebo Junkies avec Shemu.

Shemu, peux-tu nous parler de ton enfance ? Est-il vrai que tu as passé quelque temps à Paris ?

Mon père est diplomate, grâce à lui j’ai eu la chance de vivre dans différents pays quand j’étais enfant, notamment dans des pays francophones comme la France, le Gabon et la Suisse. J’ai vécu à Paris pendant trois ans, et je garde un excellent souvenir de cette période de mon enfance. J’habitais près de Cambronne et le français est devenu ma deuxième langue.

Pensez-vous que le fait d’avoir grandi dans un environnement multiculturel a influencé votre musique ?

Tout à fait, oui. Pour moi, le processus de création musicale est la plupart du temps spontané. Je chante simplement des mélodies et des paroles qui me viennent à l’esprit. Au cours de ce processus, mon environnement multiculturel a clairement influencé mes mélodies, notamment les chansons que j’écoutais enfant dans différents pays. Ce qui semble plus intéressant, c’est l’influence linguistique des trois langues que je parle (français, anglais et coréen). La culture et la façon de pensée étant profondément ancrées dans la langue elle-même, les différentes langues que je connais s’entremêlent inconsciemment et ouvrent la voie à des mélodies moins conventionnelles ou à des paroles uniques.

Lennon, laquelle de vos chansons représente le mieux Placebo Junkies selon toi ?

Je choisirais « U Suck », qui est le titre phare de notre EP. Son rythme rapide et entraînant reflète vraiment l’identité de Placebo Junkies, et c’est aussi un morceau que j’adore personnellement. Le titre de la chanson signifie « tu es nul », mais en réalité, si vous l’écoutez jusqu’à la fin, vous comprendrez que vous n’êtes pas nul, mais que vous êtes génial. Nous ne savons pas encore quel genre de musique nous allons sortir ensuite, mais le ton émotionnel de « U Suck » deviendra probablement la base de notre son.

Quelles sont vos sources d’inspiration ?

Tout. Notre famille, nos épouses, les plats savoureux que nous mangeons, les choses que nous voulons avoir, celles que nous avons perdues, etc. Ce que nous désirons et ce que nous aimons posséder sont autant de sources d’inspiration.

Etant un duo, pouvez-vous nous expliquer votre processus créatif ?

Il se déroule principalement de deux façons. Soit Shemu fait une ébauche et la transmet à Lennon, soit c’est l’inverse. Shemu se concentre principalement sur la mélodie vocale et les paroles d’une chanson. Il propose une ébauche, partage l’idée centrale qui la sous-tend, puis Lennon crée un rythme qui correspond à l’idée de Shemu. Lorsque Lennon prend les devants, il crée un rythme, puis Shemu écrit la mélodie par-dessus. Nous vivons assez loin l’un de l’autre en Corée, nous nous rencontrons donc rarement (voire jamais) pour créer simultanément sur place. Mais nous aimerions beaucoup essayer cette méthode un jour. Espérons que ce soit bientôt.

Votre EP est sorti en juillet dernier, pouvez-vous nous en parler ?

Cet EP retrace l’évolution de Placebo Junkies entre 2022 et 2023. La plupart des chansons ont été composées à cette époque, mais n’ont été publiées qu’en 2025, une fois tous les éléments assemblés. Nous voulions créer une ambiance à la fois simple et stimulante, avec des mélodies simples et entraînantes capables de faire bouger le public. C’est pourquoi nous qualifions cet EP d’album pop-rock alternatif. Le ton général des chansons est très optimiste et nous voulions transmettre le message que nous pouvons tous atteindre nos objectifs tant que nous restons dans le processus. Nous sommes toujours dans ce processus.

Quelle est l’histoire derrière la chanson Jet lag ?

L’histoire raconte l’attente d’un personnage imaginaire dans un aéroport, loin de chez lui. Il souhaite retrouver sa bien-aimée et sentir sa chaleur. On peut donc dire qu’il s’agit d’un récit typique du genre « tu me manques tellement que je vais bientôt te rejoindre ». Cependant, cette chanson a été écrite en 2022, et lorsque Shemu a écrit les paroles, il s’est dit : « Ce personnage dans la chanson ne me ressemble vraiment pas. Je suis trop pauvre pour prendre l’avion ». Cette chanson allait donc être une chanson d’amour classique, mais Placebo Junkies a eu l’occasion de se produire à Mayence, en Allemagne, lors d’un festival K-PoP Revolution, et Shemu a dû s’éloigner de sa femme pendant quelques jours. En attendant l’avion qui le ramènerait en Corée depuis Mayence, il a vraiment ressenti le sentiment décrit dans Jet Lag, et c’est pourquoi la chanson Jet Lag porte un petit titre entre parenthèses indiquant (From Mainz).

Pouvez-vous nous faire part de vos souhaits pour 2026 ?

Nous voulons vraiment être en bonne santé, que les personnes que nous aimons et toi, Charlotte, soyez en bonne santé, que nous soyons tous motivés par nos objectifs afin de pouvoir vraiment saisir la gloire et l’amour que chacun d’entre nous désire. Nous sortirons d’autres chansons, même en français, afin de nous faire connaître dans le monde entier et de répandre nos bonnes vibrations. How did the two of you meet?  How did the duo come together?

We had a mutual friend who introduced us to each other. Lennon was looking for a vocalist for his project for another group named Swimgood but ended up creating Placebo Junkies with Shemu.

Shemu, can you tell us about your upbringing? Is it true you spent some time in Paris?

My father’s a diplomat so thanks to him I had the chance to live in different countries as a kid and lived in “francophone” countries like France, Gabon and Switzerland. I lived in Paris for 3 years, and I still remember it as a wonderful time in my childhood. I lived near Cambronne and French became my second language.

Do you think spending time in a multicultural environment has influenced your music?

Definitely, yes. The music creation process to me is spontaneous most of the time. I would just be singing tunes and words right off the dome. During this process, there definitely exists melodic influence coming from my multicultural environment;from the songs I listened to as a kid in different countries. What is more interesting seems to be the linguistic influence from the 3 languages(French/English/Korean) I speak. As culture and the chain of thought is deeply embedded in language itself, the different languages I know would subconsciously intertwine and open way to less conventional melodies or unique lyrics. 

Lennon, which of your songs do you think best represents Placebo Junkies?

 I would choose “U Suck”, which is the title track of our EP. Its speedy and catchy vibe really captures the identity of Placebo Junkies, and it’s also a track I personally love. The song title is that you suck, but in reality, if you listen to it until the end, you will learn that you do not suck, but that you actually rock. We’re not sure what kind of music we’ll be releasing next, but the emotional tone of “U Suck” will probably become the foundation of our core sound.

What are your sources of inspiration?

Everything. Our family, our wives, the tasty food that we eat, the things we want to have, the things we’ve lost etc. What we desire and what we love having are all great sources of inspiration. 

Being a duo, can you walk us through your creative process?

 It’s done mainly in two ways. Either Shemu makes the sketch and tosses it to Lennon, or vice versa. Shemu mainly focuses on making the vocal melody and lyrics for a song. He would come up with a sketch, share the core idea behind it, and Lennon would create a beat which would go with Shemu’s idea. When Lennon takes the lead, he would come up with a beat, and Shemu would write melody on top of it. We live quite far away from each other in Korea, so we seldom(or never) meet to have a session for simultaneous on-the-spot creation.But we would love to try that method one day.Hopefully soon.

Your EP was released in July this year, can you talk about it? 

This EP captured Placebo Junkies from 2022-2023. Most of the songs were made back then only to be released in 2025 after bringing all the pieces together. We were aiming to go for an easy yet dopamine provoking vibe, with simple catchy melodies which can turn up the crowd. We call the EP an alternative-pop-rock album for that reason. The overall tone of the songs are very uplifting and we wanted to give out the vibe that we all can achieve what we want as long as we stay in the process. We remain in the process of it all.

What is the story behind the song Jet lag?

The story was about an imaginary person waiting for a plane, from somewhere far from his home. He wishes to go back into the arms of his loved one and feel her warmth. So we can say it has a typical “I miss you so much so I’ll be there soon” narrative. However this was written in 2022, and when Shemu wrote the lyrics, he thought “this guy in the song really doesn’t seem to be me. I’m too poor to fly anywhere”. So this song was just going to be a typical love song, but Placebo Junkies had the chance to perform in Mainz, Germany at a K-PoP revolution festival, and Shemu had to stay away from his wife for a few days. While waiting for the plane back to Korea from Mainz, he really felt the feeling Jet Lag portrayed, and that’s why the song Jet Lag has a small title in parentheses saying (From Mainz).

Can you share with us your wishes for 2026?

We really want to be healthy, have the people we love and you Charlotte to be healthy, all of us goal-motivated to be able to really grasp the glory and love each of us wants. We will release more songs, even ones in French, so wish to have ourselves known to the world to spread our good vibes. Wish you the best, stay tuned, we are Placebo Junkies!!
